Energizing Burbo Bank Wind Farm: Grid Connection

Our involvement in this expansive project was to facilitate the cable route essential for the Burbo Bank Windfarm extension, linking the coastal region of Rhyl to the newly constructed power station in Bodylwyddan. The primary challenge lay in creating this vital connection while adhering to the required 12-meter easement and ensuring that landowners maintained uninterrupted access to their properties, including the ability to move livestock freely.

  • 12,000 meters of fence
  • Over 200 gates
  • 3 Archeological dig sites
  • Multiple landowners

Challenges and Solutions: Maintaining Access and Livestock Safety

To overcome these challenges, we strategically installed a network of crossings, each equipped with four 12ft gates. These crossings not only ensured the safety of livestock but also allowed us to cordon off work areas as soon as it was safe to do so, expediting the construction process. This approach effectively balanced the need for easement with the essential access requirements of landowners.

Fencing Details: Protecting the Landscape

The fencing employed for this extensive project was a standard temporary agricultural fence. This robust barrier consisted of C8/80/15 galvanised mesh complemented by two strands of barbed wire. Its purpose was to safeguard the surrounding landscape while facilitating the cable route, and keeping workers and livestock safely apart.

Ecological Considerations: Preserving Local Wildlife

Beyond the core fencing work, this project carried several ecological considerations. We took extensive measures to protect local wildlife by installing thousands of meters of specialist newt fencing, ensuring the delicate balance of the ecosystem was maintained throughout the project’s duration.

Reinstatement Works: Restoring the Environment

Upon successful project completion, our commitment extended to assisting the client with vital reinstatement works. This multifaceted effort included the removal of fencing, conducted with meticulous care to eliminate any threat to livestock by ensuring the removal of staples and wire from the fields. Additionally, we undertook hedge reinstatement work, fencing around hedge excavations, replanting, and implementing protective measures. Furthermore, our involvement extended to weed control, where we applied effective mowing practices to restore the environment to its natural state. Our dedication to every aspect of the project underscored our commitment to excellence and the responsible stewardship of the landscape.
